This is part of the folklore and myth surrounding the Pendle Witches. Nicholas Demdyke was a supposed rival to John Paslew to become Abbot of Whalley, John Paslew contrived to have Demdyke found guilty of following the devil and he was walled up alive somewhere in Whalley Abbey. He was resucued by the devil and supposedly returned as an evil spirit and became the executioner of John Paslew. Again this is largely myth.
